Yet another mountain

Estany de Sant Maurici

Sunday 30th Sept Refugi d'Amitges to Espot 10.5 kms

After the last 2 hell days we awoke early hoping for good weather. We had an easy day ahead, a gentle downhill all the way to Espot, a small village but with some shops and a bar or 2. The dawn sky was cloud free and the surrounding high peaks reflected the early morning sun. The night before we were absolutely exhausted. A hot shower and dinner was all i could manage. I was unconscious by 8.30. We would not be able to stay at refuges any more, at least the ones that provide food and bunks with mattresses, as the season was over and they all close. So from now on overnighting in the mountains will be in the tent or in the "free" refuges which generally amount to little more tham a stone shack with a wooden platform on which to sleep with no other facilities. To make it worse, most of them have been vandalised. We wandered down past Sant Maurici, a lake after which the national park in which we are, was named. Very pretty but it was sunday and there were lots of "domingueros" (sunday visitors) about and, as we had become used to having all of the scenery to ourselves, we pushed on. We arrived in Espot a little after midday, had a couple of beers at a cafe, walked out to the edge of town and set up the tents at a camping ground. After doing all the domestic stuff (laundry, shower, gear repairs, etc.) we shouted ourselves a restaurant meal then wandered back over the ancient street beside the rushing river in the darkness to our sleeping bags.

The start of the hardest day.
